More retailers are moving from self-hosted Magento 2 to Shopify Plus every year — not because Magento is bad, but because they want to stop paying for servers, security patches, and a full-time developer just to keep the store online. Shopify Plus trades control for operational simplicity, and for many mid-market brands that's the right trade.
But a platform migration is not an export-import. It's a data-mapping project, an SEO project, and a change-management project wearing a trench coat. Done carelessly, it costs you rankings and revenue. Done deliberately, customers never notice it happened. Here's the playbook we use. If you'd rather hand the whole thing off, that's our e-commerce migration service.
First, decide whether you should migrate at all
Shopify Plus is a fit when your catalog is standard-to-moderately-complex, you want managed hosting and PCI handled for you, and your differentiation is merchandising and speed-to-market — not a deeply custom checkout. It's a poor fit if you depend on highly custom pricing logic, ERP-driven catalogs with tens of thousands of configurable SKUs, or checkout behaviour Shopify won't let you change.
Map your data before you move a single record
Magento's EAV data model and Shopify's flat product model don't line up one-to-one. The mapping decisions you make here determine how clean the store is on the other side, so make them on paper first:
- Products & variants — Magento configurable/associated products become Shopify products with variants (max 100 variants / 3 options each). Catalogs that exceed this need a variant strategy or a metafield-driven app.
- Custom attributes — map Magento attributes to Shopify metafields deliberately; don't dump everything into tags.
- Categories — Magento category trees become Shopify collections (manual or automated). Decide which become smart collections driven by rules.
- Customers — migrate accounts without passwords (they can't be exported in plain text); trigger a password reset invite at launch.
- Orders — historical orders usually import as records for reference, not as re-processable orders. Set that expectation with the client early.
Protect the SEO equity — this is where migrations bleed money
Your Magento URLs are indexed and ranking. Shopify enforces its own URL prefixes (/products/, /collections/), so almost every URL will change. Without a complete redirect map, you hand years of ranking back to Google. Treat the redirect strategy as a first-class deliverable, not a launch-day afterthought:
- Crawl the live Magento store (Screaming Frog or Sitebulb) and export every indexed URL plus its traffic and backlinks.
- Map each old URL to its new Shopify equivalent — products, categories, CMS pages, and blog posts.
- Implement 301 redirects for every mapping; never let a ranking URL 404 or chain through multiple hops.
- Recreate title tags, meta descriptions, and structured data on the Shopify side — don't let the theme's defaults overwrite your optimised metadata.
- Keep the redirects live indefinitely; removing them a month after launch is a classic self-inflicted traffic drop.
Migration Audit
Not sure if Shopify Plus is the right move for your store?
We will review your Magento store and highlight SEO risks, migration complexity, integration gaps, and the safest rollout approach before you start moving data.
Rebuild integrations, don't assume them
Every Magento extension and integration — payment, tax, shipping, ERP, email, reviews — needs a Shopify equivalent or a rebuild. Inventory them, classify each as "native Shopify feature", "Plus-certified app", or "custom build", and test the business-critical ones (checkout, tax, inventory sync) first. Bulk data moves through Shopify's Admin API, which is rate-limited, so large catalogs need batched, throttled import scripts rather than a single dump.
Stage it, test it, then cut over on purpose
Build the store on a Shopify development store or a password-protected Plus environment. Import a representative slice of the catalog, process end-to-end test orders with the real payment gateway in test mode, and run the client's operations team through a full UAT — placing orders, issuing refunds, checking that confirmation emails and inventory sync behave.
Only then plan the cutover: a final delta sync of recent orders and inventory, the DNS switch during a low-traffic window, and a rollback plan ready in case something critical fails. A calm, rehearsed cutover beats a Friday-night big-bang every time.
The first 72 hours matter most
- Watch checkout and payment error rates in real time.
- Crawl your top URLs daily to catch any redirect you missed.
- Review Google Search Console coverage for new errors for at least two weeks.
- Compare the order funnel against your Magento baseline so a silent drop can't hide.
