The Deadline is Here: Migrating from checkout.liquid to Shopify Checkout Extensibility

Shopify is retiring checkout.liquid. Here is everything enterprise brands need to know about migrating to Checkout Extensibility securely and without losing conversions.

For years, Shopify Plus merchants relied on `checkout.liquid` to customize their checkout experience. Whether it was adding custom fields, loyalty program redemptions, or complex tracking scripts, editing the liquid file was the standard approach. But Shopify is changing the paradigm: `checkout.liquid` is being fully deprecated in favor of Checkout Extensibility.

Why is Shopify killing checkout.liquid?

Editing `checkout.liquid` was powerful, but it was also brittle. Every custom modification increased the risk of breaking the checkout flow during platform updates. Furthermore, it prevented merchants from easily adopting new native features like one-page checkout and Shop Pay enhancements. Checkout Extensibility moves customizations out of the core template and into secure, app-based UI components.

  • Security: Custom code runs in a sandboxed environment, preventing malicious scripts from stealing payment data.
  • Upgradability: Your customizations won't break when Shopify releases new checkout features.
  • Performance: The new checkout is built on modern web standards and is significantly faster.

The Migration Path: What you need to do

Migrating isn't as simple as flipping a switch. It requires auditing your current customizations and rebuilding them using the new framework.

  1. Audit existing customizations: Document every script, styling tweak, and custom logic currently in your `checkout.liquid`.
  2. Replace UI tweaks with branding settings: Many visual customizations can now be handled directly in the new Checkout Editor.
  3. Rebuild complex logic with Checkout UI Extensions: Custom fields, upsells, and loyalty redemptions must be rebuilt as custom apps using React and the UI Extensions API.
  4. Move tracking to Web Pixels: Third-party analytics and tracking scripts must be migrated to the new Web Pixels API, ensuring they load securely without impacting checkout speed.
Warning: If you miss the deadline to migrate, your checkout will automatically revert to the default uncustomized version. All your custom tracking, fields, and upsells will stop working instantly.
